How to Draw a Mare and Foal

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a mare and foal in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the mare's head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The mare's head

Near the top, left of the middle, draw a sideways peanut head: a round cheek and a smaller nose end.

Tip The nose end points down to the left. Leave room below it for the foal.

  2. Step 2: Eye, nose and smile

Draw 1 big oval eye with a black dot. Add a nostril and a curved smile on the nose end.

Tip Only 1 eye shows, because we see her from the side.

  3. Step 3: Ears and fringe

On top of the head draw 2 pointed leaf ears. Add a tuft of hair flopping onto the forehead.

  4. Step 4: Neck and back

Rule the ground. Start behind the ear. Draw down the neck, along the back and round her bottom, then stop.

Tip The line ends half way down her bottom.

  5. Step 5: Legs and tummy

From under the cheek draw the chest, a front leg, the tummy and a back leg up to her bottom.

Tip Each leg gets thinner on the way down and ends in a hoof with a line across.

  6. Step 6: Far legs

Behind each leg draw another leg peeking out. Give each one a hoof with a line across.

  7. Step 7: Mane and tail

Draw 4 fat bumps of mane down the back of the neck. Draw a long tail from her bottom.

Tip The tail is thick at the top and thin at the tip.

  8. Step 8: The foal's head

Under the mare's nose draw a small peanut head. Add 2 pointed ears on top.

  9. Step 9: The foal's face

Give the foal 1 big eye with a black dot, a tiny nostril and a smile.

  10. Step 10: The foal's body

From behind the foal's ear draw a back, then the chest, front leg, tummy and back leg to meet it.

Tip A foal's legs are long and thin, with small hooves.

  11. Step 11: Wobbly far legs

Draw 2 more thin legs leaning forward: one under the foal's chin and one under its tummy.

  12. Step 12: Fluffy mane and tail

Draw 3 small bumps of mane on the foal's neck. Add a short fluffy tail.

  13. Step 13: Ginger coats

Colour the mare and her foal ginger. Leave the eyes, manes, tails and hooves white for now.

  14. Step 14: Brown and grey

Colour both manes, both tails and the mare's fringe brown. Colour all 8 hooves dark grey.
