How to Draw a Dimetrodon
Draw a dimetrodon in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
On the left, below the middle, draw an egg lying on its side. The thin end is the snout.
Tip Leave lots of room above: a huge sail is coming.
Step 2: Big eye
Draw one big round eye in the middle of the head. Add a nostril dot near the snout tip.
Step 3: The smile
Start at the snout tip. Draw a long smile back to under the eye, curling up at the end.
Step 4: Neck and back
Start at the back of the head. Draw a long low back line right, stopping well before the edge.
Tip Leave room on the right for the tail.
Step 5: The tail
Start where the back stopped. Draw a long tail sloping down to a point, then back under.
Step 6: Tummy and band
Start under the chin, draw a tummy line, stop at the tail. Add a band line above, meeting both ends.
Step 7: The sail
Start on the back behind the neck. Sweep up in a tall half circle and stop near the rump.
Tip The sail is taller than the body is deep.
Step 8: Sail spines
Draw 7 straight spines from the back line to the sail's edge, spreading out like a fan.
Step 9: Two near legs
From the tummy draw 2 lizard legs that bend towards each other, with flat 3-toed feet level at the bottom.
Step 10: Far legs and ground
Behind each leg, draw the far leg peeking out a little. Add a ground line under the feet.
Step 11: Cream and orange
Colour the band cream. Colour the head, body, tail and legs orange, around it. Leave the eye white.
Step 12: Red sail
Go over your lines. Colour the sail red.
