How to Draw a Loon
Draw a loon in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a round head.
Step 1: A round head
Near the top left draw a round head, a little wider than tall, with a tiny chin bump.
Tip Leave room underneath for a thick neck and a long body.
Step 2: Dagger beak
Start on the front of the head. Draw a thin dagger beak out to a point and back.
Tip Keep the beak short and fat, held level, with a mouth line.
Step 3: One big eye
Behind the beak, level with the middle of the head, draw a big round eye with a black dot.
Step 4: Neck and necklace
From the head draw 2 thick neck lines down, stopping almost a head lower. Add 4 slanted necklace stripes.
Step 5: Chest and back
From the neck curve a chest down. Draw a long low back and curve it down to the same height.
Tip The loon sits low and long on the water, like a boat.
Step 6: Wing and spots
Draw a big teardrop wing low on the body with 2 feather lines. Above it add 2 rows of spots.
Step 7: Wavy water
Draw a soft wavy water line from edge to edge, touching the ends of both body lines. Add 2 ripples.
Step 8: Blue water
Colour the water blue, under the wavy line all the way across the page.
Step 9: Grey beak and wing
Colour the beak and the wing grey.
Step 10: Black loon
Colour the head, neck and body black around the grey wing. Leave the eye, spots and necklace stripes white.
