How to Draw a Mara
Draw a mara in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top left draw a long egg lying down for the head, with a blunt flat front.
Tip Leave room above for tall ears and on the right for the body.
Step 2: Tall ears
On the back of the head draw a tall round-tipped ear with a leaf inside. Add one peeking behind.
Tip The ears sit far back, away from the nose.
Step 3: Big eye
High on the head draw 1 big oval eye. Colour a big black dot inside, leaving a white shine.
Step 4: Nose and smile
Draw a small black nose high on the flat front. From the edge below it, draw a short smile inwards.
Step 5: Neck and back
From the back of the head draw a short neck, a long back and a round bottom. Stop halfway down.
Tip The line dips down the neck, then runs almost flat.
Step 6: Chest and front leg
Draw the ground. From the chin, curve down the chest into a long thin leg, round a paw and up.
Tip A mara has long legs, so leave lots of room under the head.
Step 7: Tummy and back leg
Start at the front leg. Draw the tummy, a wide thigh, a thin leg and paw, up to the bottom.
Tip The back leg bends halfway down.
Step 8: Far legs
Under the tummy draw 2 more thin legs peeking out: one leaning back, one leaning forward.
Tip All 4 paws sit on the ground.
Step 9: Toes
On each near paw draw 2 short curved toe lines. Draw 1 on each far paw.
Step 10: Stubby tail
Start on the back of the bottom. Draw a small round bump for the tail, back to the bottom.
Step 11: Pale patch
Start on the back, above the tail. Draw a curve down across the bottom, stopping at the back leg.
Tip This patch stays white.
Step 12: Peach ear
Colour the leaf inside the near ear peach.
Step 13: Tan fur
Colour the mara tan, around the peach ear middle. Leave the eye and the patch white.
