How to Draw a Manhole Cover
Draw a manhole cover in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the cover.
Step 1: The cover
In the middle of your paper draw a big flat oval, much wider than it is tall.
Tip Workers lift this heavy iron lid to climb down to the pipes.
Step 2: Thick rim
Draw a second flat oval inside the first, a finger in all the way round, for the thick rim.
Step 3: Lines across
Inside the rim draw 4 straight lines across, evenly spaced. Start and stop each one on the rim.
Step 4: Lines up and down
Draw 4 straight lines up and down, evenly spaced, to make a grid. Start and stop each on the rim.
Step 5: Two lifting holes
In the middle space at the top and at the bottom, draw a small flat oval hole for lifting.
Step 6: Road edges
Draw a long line above the cover and one below. Start at one edge, stop at the other.
Step 7: Lane dashes
Between the top line and the cover draw 3 short flat boxes in a row, for the road's dashed line.
Step 8: Yellow dashes, stone cover
Go over your lines. Colour the dashes yellow and inside the rim stone grey, leaving the 2 holes white.
Step 9: Grey rim
Colour the thick rim grey, all the way around the stone middle.
Step 10: Slate road
Colour the road slate grey, going around the cover and the yellow dashes.
Step 11: Black holes
Colour the 2 lifting holes black. Your manhole cover is done!
