How to Draw a Madeleine

11 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a madeleine in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a plate.

Print

  1. Step 1: A plate

In the middle of your paper draw a big oval plate, most of the way across.

  2. Step 2: The rim

Draw a second oval a finger inside the plate, all the way round, for the rim.

  3. Step 3: The shell cake

Inside the rim draw a plump shell cake: narrow and round at the bottom, 7 soft bumps on top.

Tip Keep the bumps small and soft, so it looks like a cake, not a seashell.

  4. Step 4: The baked side

Start at the cake's left side. Draw a line down, along under the cake, and up to its right side.

  5. Step 5: 3 ridges

From near the narrow end draw 3 lines fanning up to the dips between the left bumps.

  6. Step 6: 3 more ridges

Draw 3 more lines from near the narrow end up to the dips between the right bumps.

  7. Step 7: Crumbs

Draw 3 tiny round crumbs inside the rim beside the cake, 2 on the left and one on the right.

  8. Step 8: The table

Draw a table line under the plate from well left to well right, just touching its bottom.

  9. Step 9: Tan cake

Go over your lines, then colour the top of the cake tan.

  10. Step 10: Sky plate

Colour the plate sky blue, all around the cake and the crumbs.

  11. Step 11: Toasted edge

Colour the baked side and the crumbs ginger, and your madeleine is done!
