How to Draw a Lace Pattern

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a lace pattern in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: top and sides.

Print

  1. Step 1: Top and sides

Start low on the left. Draw a line up, across the top and down. Stop low on the right.

Tip It looks like a wide box with no bottom.

  2. Step 2: Scalloped edge

Start at the bottom of the left line. Draw 3 big U bumps across and stop at the right line.

Tip Lace often has a wavy edge like this. The bumps are called scallops.

  3. Step 3: The top band

A finger below the top edge, draw a straight line. Start on the left side, stop on the right.

  4. Step 4: Band holes

In the band above that line, draw a neat row of 8 small circles.

  5. Step 5: Flower middles

Under the band draw 3 small circles in a row, one above the middle of each bump.

  6. Step 6: Top and bottom petals

Draw a small circle just above each of the 3 circles and another just below it, not touching.

Tip Leave a little gap between the circles, so the lace holds together.

  7. Step 7: Side petals

Add 2 more small circles on each side of every middle. Now each flower is a ring of 6.

  8. Step 8: Big teardrops

Inside each of the 3 bumps draw a big teardrop with its point up. Keep it off the edge.

  9. Step 9: Two round holes

Between the big teardrops draw 2 round holes, one in each gap.

Tip Lace is cloth full of holes that make a pattern.

  10. Step 10: Light blue flowers

Go over your lines. Colour the 3 flowers light blue: every middle and the 6 circles round it.

Tip The blue is the table showing through the holes in the lace.

  11. Step 11: More blue holes

Colour the 8 band holes, the 3 big teardrops and the 2 round holes light blue too.

  12. Step 12: Cream lace

Colour all the lace cream, round the blue holes and down into every bump. Your lace pattern is done!
