How to Draw a Kookaburra

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a kookaburra in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big round head

Start low on the left. Draw a big round head over the top and stop underneath, leaving a neck gap.

Tip Leave the gap under the chin, where the body joins.

  2. Step 2: Huge heavy beak

Start on the face. Draw a huge wedge beak pointing left, back to the chin. Add a mouth line.

Tip The beak is as long as the head.

  3. Step 3: Eye, cap, stripe

Behind the beak, draw a big eye with a dot. Add a cap line and a stripe behind the eye.

Tip The stripe runs from the eye to the back of the head, where the cap ends.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start on the back of the head. Draw a big round body down and around, and stop under the beak.

Tip The body is an egg, narrower than the head.

  5. Step 5: Barred tail

Start at the back. Draw a fan tail pointing down and back, and stop on the tummy. Add 2 bars.

  6. Step 6: Folded wing

Where the head line stops, draw a teardrop wing to the tail, tucked under the head. Add 2 feather lines.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Under the front of the tummy, draw a short leg with 3 chubby toes: 2 forward, 1 back.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

Draw the other leg the same way, a thumb further back. Leave a gap between the feet.

  9. Step 9: The branch

Under the toes, draw a long branch with round ends.

Tip The toes wrap over the front of the branch.

  10. Step 10: Tan beak, ginger tail

Colour the bottom half of the beak tan and the tail ginger. Leave the head, tummy and eye white.

  11. Step 11: Brown cap and wing

Colour the cap, the eye stripe, the wing, the strip of back and the branch brown.

  12. Step 12: Grey beak and legs

Go over your lines. Colour the top half of the beak and both legs dark grey.
