Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top left draw a big round head, a little wider than tall. Add a tiny chin bump.

Tip Leave room on the right and below for the body and legs.

  2. Step 2: Short pointed beak

Start on the front of the head. Draw a short fat triangle beak and stop on the head.

  3. Step 3: One big eye

A finger behind the beak draw a big round eye. Add a black dot with a white speck.

  4. Step 4: Body and 2 bands

Start under the chin. Draw a big round body and stop at the back. Add 2 bands across the chest.

Tip No other bird has 2 chest bands. Leave white between them.

  5. Step 5: Fan tail

Start at the back of the body. Draw a fan tail pointing down and back, stop on the tummy.

  6. Step 6: Folded wing

Start under the back of the head. Draw a teardrop wing along the side and stop above the tail.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Start under the tummy. Draw a thin leg bending backwards, 3 toes, then back up to the tummy.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

A finger further back, start under the tummy and draw the other leg and 3 toes the same way.

Tip Leave a gap between the 2 feet.

  9. Step 9: Gravel

Start at the left edge. Draw a ground line under the feet to the right edge. Add 3 pebbles.

  10. Step 10: Brown head, black bands

Colour the head and the strip of back above the wing brown. Colour the bands and beak black.

  11. Step 11: Brown wing and tail

Colour the wing and the fan tail brown, pressing lightly so the feather lines still show.

  12. Step 12: White tummy, tan legs

Leave the chest and tummy white, like the paper. Colour the legs tan and the gravel sand.
