How to Draw a Katydid
Draw a katydid in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top, draw a big egg head: flat on top, round cheeks, a small chin. Leave room below.
Step 2: Very long feelers
From the top of the head, sweep a long feeler up and out, stopping before the edge. Do both sides.
Tip Let each tip curl a little down, and add a tiny ball on the end.
Step 3: Two big eyes
Across the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes an eye apart. Put a black dot in each.
Step 4: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw an open smile: a flat line with a U under it. Add 2 round cheeks.
Step 5: The middle bead
Under the chin, draw a small round ball hanging from the middle of the head.
Step 6: The long tummy
Under the bead, draw a long egg hanging down, narrower than the head, with a soft point at the bottom.
Step 7: Tummy stripes
A finger under the bead, draw a smile line across the tummy, side to side. Add another a thumb lower.
Step 8: Leaf wings
On each side, draw a slim leaf wing from the bead down behind the tummy, its tip poking out below.
Tip Stop the pointed tip just below the tummy, well above the ground.
Step 9: Leaf veins
Down the middle of each wing, draw one thin line from the top toward the pointed tip.
Step 10: Big jumping legs
From each hip, draw a fat thigh to a round knee, a thin shin to a foot, then the ground.
Tip The thigh is fat at the hip and thin at the knee, like a drumstick.
Step 11: Small legs
From the bead, draw 2 small bent legs each side, getting thinner toward a ball above the big thighs.
Step 12: Light green body
Colour the cheeks pink, then the head and body light green around the cheeks and mouth. Leave the eyes white.
Step 13: Red mouth, green legs
Colour the mouth red. Colour all 6 legs, the feet, the feeler balls and both wings dark green.
