How to Draw an Iris

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw an iris in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the top petal.

Print

  1. Step 1: The top petal

Start at a spot a third of the way down. Draw a tall egg petal up, back to the spot.

  2. Step 2: 2 petals leaning

Start on the spot. Draw a shorter petal leaning up left, behind the tall one. Do the same leaning right.

  3. Step 3: The drooping petal

Start on the spot and draw a big round petal hanging straight down, back up to the spot.

  4. Step 4: 2 more drooping

Start on the spot. Draw a big petal hanging down left, behind the middle one. Same on the right.

  5. Step 5: Yellow beards

Down the middle of each drooping petal draw one soft teardrop stroke, pointed at the spot.

  6. Step 6: The stem

Start under the flower. Draw 2 gentle lines down to near the bottom, a little wider apart at the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Sword leaves

Start beside the bottom of the stem. Draw a tall sword leaf leaning left, back down. Draw another leaning right.

  8. Step 8: Ground and grass

Start near the left edge. Draw a soft ground line through the stem, stop near the right edge. Add grass.

  9. Step 9: Yellow beards, green leaves

Colour the 3 beards yellow, then colour the stem and both sword leaves green.

  10. Step 10: Purple petals

Colour all 6 petals purple, going around the yellow beards. Your iris is done!
