How to Draw an Inkwell

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an inkwell in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the glass jar.

Print

  1. Step 1: The glass jar

Below the middle draw the ink jar: a fat round belly with a flat bottom, open at the top.

Tip Long ago people dipped a feather quill in the ink to write.

  2. Step 2: Neck and lip

From each top end of the jar draw a short neck line up to a flat oval rim.

  3. Step 3: A happy face

On the jar's belly draw 2 big egg eyes, a U smile, and a tiny cheek beside each end.

  4. Step 4: The ink level

Below the smile draw a gently curved line across the jar, from side to side: the top of the ink.

  5. Step 5: The quill

From inside the opening, draw a long curved shaft up to the top right, with a feather round the top.

Tip Wide at the bottom, narrowing to a point at the very tip.

  6. Step 6: Feather notches

On the wide side of the feather draw 3 short slanted notches cutting in from the edge.

  7. Step 7: The ground

Draw a ground line under the jar, from near the left edge to near the right edge.

  8. Step 8: Glass shine

Start just inside the jar's upper left side. Draw a short curved shine down, stopping level with the eyes.

  9. Step 9: Sparkles

Add a sparkle on each side of the jar.

  10. Step 10: Yellow sparkles

Colour the 2 sparkles yellow. Leave the feather white.

  11. Step 11: Pink cheeks

    Colour both cheeks rosy pink.

  12. Step 12: Sky glass

Colour the rim, neck and glass above the ink line sky blue, around the cheeks. Leave the eyes white.

  13. Step 13: Navy ink

Colour the ink below the ink line navy. Go over your lines and your inkwell is ready to write!
