How to Draw an Impossible Heart

11 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw an impossible heart in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the big heart.

Print

  1. Step 1: The big heart

Draw a big heart that almost fills your paper: a dip on top, 2 round bumps, a point below.

Tip Fold-line trick: make the left side match the right side.

  2. Step 2: A small heart

Inside, draw a small heart the same shape. Leave a wide, even gap all the way round.

  3. Step 3: Right middle line

Start on the small heart, left of its dip. Go round the right side and stop on the big heart.

Tip Stay halfway between the hearts and pass both points before you stop.

  4. Step 4: Top tail

Start at the big heart's dip. Carry the right bump's line on, down-left. Stop halfway to the small heart.

Tip A tail is short: about as long as the gap is wide.

  5. Step 5: Bottom tail

Start at the small heart's point. Carry its right side on, down-left. Stop halfway to the big heart.

  6. Step 6: Left middle line

Start at the top tail's end. Go round the left side between the hearts. Stop at the bottom tail's end.

Tip Keep your line halfway between the 2 hearts.

  7. Step 7: Sparkles on the left

On the left of the heart, draw 2 small sparkle stars, one higher and one lower.

  8. Step 8: Sparkles on the right

Draw 2 more small sparkle stars on the right to match.

  9. Step 9: Floor and shadow

Draw a flat oval shadow under the heart's point, and a floor line out from each end.

Tip The point of the heart touches the middle of the shadow.

  10. Step 10: Yellow and pink

Colour the sparkles yellow. Colour the outside band on the left pink, and follow it inside on the right.

Tip The pink band stops where a line cuts across it.

  11. Step 11: Red band, grey shadow

Colour the other band red and the shadow grey. Each band goes over AND under the other. Impossible!
