How to Draw a Phoenix Rising

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a phoenix rising in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head and flames.

Print

  1. Step 1: Head and flames

Draw a big round head near the top left. On top, draw 3 soft flames curling back.

  2. Step 2: Hooked beak

Start on the front of the head. Hook out and down to a point, then back up to the head.

Tip Short and fat, like a parrot beak.

  3. Step 3: Big eye

A finger behind the beak draw a big round eye. Fill it with a black dot, leaving a white speck.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

From the head's right side, curve down, round the bottom and up to the chin. Rub out the neck line.

Tip The body is an egg tipped over: chest up, tail end down.

  5. Step 5: Rising flame tail

From the back of the body, draw 3 long soft plumes with tips curling up, then back to the body.

Tip Soft curves, not zigzags. The tail lifts well above the fire.

  6. Step 6: Raised wing

From behind the head go up to a round tip, then down in 4 bumps. Add 3 short feather lines.

  7. Step 7: A bed of flames

Start low on the left. Draw 4 soft flames across the tummy, tallest in the middle, down to the right.

  8. Step 8: Flames inside

Inside the big fire draw a smaller fire: 3 pointy tongues on a curved bottom, low in the middle.

Tip The little flames are the hottest, so they sit low.

  9. Step 9: Flame licks

Low on each side of the fire, draw a flame leaning out. Start and stop on the fire.

  10. Step 10: Yellow flames and tail

Colour the head flames, the hooked beak and the flame tail yellow.

  11. Step 11: Orange fire, yellow inside

Colour the little flames inside yellow, then the big flames and licks orange around them.

  12. Step 12: Red bird, orange wing

Go over your lines. Colour the wing orange, then the head and body red. Leave the eye white.
