How to Draw an Illinois Map
Draw an illinois map in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the top edge.
Step 1: The top edge
Start near the top, on the left. Draw a straight line to the right. Stop past the middle.
Tip Illinois is tall and thin. Leave lots of room below this line.
Step 2: The lake shore
Carry on from the right end. Draw a short line down, curving out to the right. Stop there.
Step 3: The right side
Carry on from there. Draw a long straight line down. Stop a bit past halfway down your paper.
Tip Use a ruler if you like. This edge is perfectly straight.
Step 4: The river side
Carry on from there. Wiggle a line down, leaning to the left. Stop at a small corner.
Tip Rivers make all the wiggly edges of Illinois.
Step 5: The bottom tip
Carry on from the corner. Wiggle a line down to the left. Stop at a point at the very bottom.
Step 6: Up the big river
From the bottom point, wiggle a line up, leaning left. Then lean right and stop at a small corner.
Tip This long side is a huge river, the Mississippi.
Step 7: The big bulge
From that corner, go left a little. Then curve up and out to the left. Stop at the widest place.
Step 8: Back to the top
Carry on from there. Wiggle a line up, leaning to the right. Join the start of your top line.
Step 9: The big lake
From the top of the lake shore, draw a line up. From the bottom, curve right and up.
Tip This is Lake Michigan. It runs off the top of your paper.
Step 10: The capital star
In the middle of the state, draw a star for the capital city, Springfield.
Tip On a map, a star shows the capital city.
Step 11: Blue lake
Go over your lines. Colour the lake light blue, up to the top of the paper.
Step 12: Green land
Colour all of the land green, around the star.
Step 13: Red star
Colour the star red. Your map of Illinois is done!
