How to Draw an Illinois Flag

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an illinois flag in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: pole and ground.

Print

  1. Step 1: Pole and ground

Draw a tall thin pole on the left, a ball on top, and a ground line from edge to edge.

  2. Step 2: The waving flag

Start on the pole below the ball. Draw a wavy top edge, a straight right side, a wavy bottom edge.

Tip Make the flag big. It has to hold an eagle and a word.

  3. Step 3: Eagle's head

Above the middle of the flag draw a round head with a bumpy neck, a hooked beak and an eye.

Tip The beak points to the left and hooks down at the tip.

  4. Step 4: The body

Under the head draw an egg shape for the body, a little wider than the head.

Tip The bumpy neck feathers sit over the top of the egg.

  5. Step 5: Two wings

From each shoulder draw a wing reaching up and out, with 4 soft feather bumps along the bottom.

Tip Draw one wing, then copy it on the other side so they match.

  6. Step 6: The shield

Over the bottom of the body draw a shield: a flat top, 2 straight sides and a rounded point.

  7. Step 7: Shield stripes

Draw a line across the shield near the top. From it draw 2 lines straight down to the bottom edge.

  8. Step 8: The rock

Behind the shield draw a low rock: a wide bump with a flat bottom, level with the shield's point.

  9. Step 9: The ribbon

From the beak draw a ribbon looping up and waving over the eagle's head. Cut a V in its end.

Tip Keep the ribbon the same width all the way along.

  10. Step 10: Yellow and grey

Colour the ball and the beak yellow. Colour the pole and the rock grey.

  11. Step 11: Red ribbon and stripes

Colour the ribbon red. On the shield colour the 2 outside stripes red and leave the middle one white.

  12. Step 12: Brown eagle

Colour the body and both wings brown. Leave the head, the neck and the flag white.

  13. Step 13: Blue shield and word

Colour the top of the shield blue. Under the rock write ILLINOIS in blue capital letters. Your flag is waving!

Tip Count the letters as you go: there are 8.
