How to Draw an Ichthyosaurus
Draw an ichthyosaurus in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: body and thin beak.
Step 1: Body and thin beak
Across the middle, draw 1 long body pointing left, with a thin beak, a round forehead and a narrow tail.
Step 2: Huge eye
In the front of the head, draw 1 huge round eye. Add a big black dot and 2 little shines.
Tip Ichthyosaurs had the biggest eyes of any animal ever.
Step 3: Long smile
From the beak tip, draw a line back along the beak, curling up into a smile under the eye.
Step 4: Fish tail
On the tail end, draw a big crescent moon tail standing up, with 2 points and a notch between.
Tip A fish tail, not a flat whale tail.
Step 5: Back fin
Start on the back. Draw a small rounded fin up and over, and stop on the back again.
Step 6: Flippers
Under the tummy, draw a paddle flipper hanging down and back. Draw a smaller one near the tail.
Step 7: Tummy line
Start on the smile. Draw 1 long gentle curve back above the flippers, and stop at the tail.
Step 8: Water and bubbles
Across the top, draw a wavy water line from side to side. Add 3 bubbles above the beak.
Step 9: Cream tummy, blue flippers
Colour the lower beak and the tummy under the line cream, and both flippers blue.
Step 10: Colour it navy
Colour the body and beak above the lines, the back fin and the tail navy. Leave the eye white.
Step 11: Blue sea
Colour the sea blue, from the wavy line down to the bottom, all around the ichthyosaurus.
