How to Draw an Umbrellabird

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an umbrellabird in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head and puffy hairdo.

Print

  1. Step 1: Head and puffy hairdo

Near the top left draw a round head. Over it draw a big puff curling forward over the forehead.

Tip The puff hangs forward over the beak, like an umbrella.

  2. Step 2: Stout beak

From the head's front draw a short fat beak out left and back to it. Add a mouth line.

  3. Step 3: One big eye

A finger behind the beak draw a big round eye. Fill it with a black dot, leaving a white speck.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start at the back of the head. Draw down, round a fat tummy, and up to stop under the beak.

Tip The body is a plump egg under the head, narrower than the head.

  5. Step 5: Long feathery tie

Start under the chin. Draw a long thin tie down the chest to a round end and back up.

Tip This feathery tie is the umbrellabird's other special thing.

  6. Step 6: Fan tail

Start on the rump. Draw a fan down and back, round the wide end, and back to the tummy.

  7. Step 7: Folded wing

Start under the back of the head. Draw a round shoulder, then sweep back to a point on the rump.

  8. Step 8: Front leg and toes

Start on the tummy. Draw a short leg down, 3 chubby toes curling over, and back up to the tummy.

Tip The toes curl down, ready to grip the branch.

  9. Step 9: Back leg and toes

A thumb behind it, start on the tummy again. Draw a second leg and toes the same way.

  10. Step 10: The branch

From the left edge, draw a long branch under the toes, hopping over them, round the end and back.

Tip The toes wrap over the branch, so the bird really grips.

  11. Step 11: Wood branch

Colour the branch light wood brown, going round the toes.

  12. Step 12: Dark grey bird

Colour the bird dark grey all over, legs and toes too, around the tie and beak. Leave the eye white.

Tip Press lightly so your feather lines still show.

  13. Step 13: Black tie and beak

Colour the tie and the beak black, and your umbrellabird is done!
