How to Draw a Hyena
Draw a hyena in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big round head.
Step 1: Big round head
Near the top right of the page, draw a big round head.
Tip Leave lots of room on the left for the long body.
Step 2: Blunt muzzle
Low on the head, draw a short fat muzzle poking out right. Add a black nose on the end.
Tip A hyena's muzzle is short and blunt, not pointy.
Step 3: Two round ears
On top of the head, draw 2 round ears side by side, with a curve inside each.
Tip Hyena ears are round, not pointy.
Step 4: Eye and smile
Above the muzzle, draw a big eye with a black dot and shine. Add a smile under the nose.
Step 5: Sloping body
Start behind the head. Slope the back down to a low bottom, then draw the tummy back to the chin.
Tip High shoulders and a low bottom: that slope is what makes a hyena.
Step 6: Front leg
Draw a ground line. Under the chest, draw a long front leg down to a round paw with 2 toes.
Step 7: Back leg
Under the low bottom, draw a shorter back leg down to a round paw with 2 toes.
Step 8: Far legs
Draw the far legs peeking out: one behind the front leg, one in front of the back leg.
Step 9: Short mane
Start behind the head. Draw 3 soft bumps along the neck, and stop on the shoulders.
Step 10: Short tail
From the top of the bottom, draw a short bushy tail hanging down to a point, and back.
Step 11: Five spots
Draw 5 round spots on the body: 4 in a row under the back, 1 on the chest.
Tip Keep every spot inside the body lines.
Step 12: Sandy colour
Go over your lines. Colour the hyena sandy, around the muzzle, mane, tail and spots. Leave the eye white.
Step 13: Brown parts
Colour the muzzle, the mane, the tail and every spot brown.
