How to Draw a Houseboat

Step 1: The waves

Start at the left edge, below the middle. Draw wave bumps across to the right edge. Add ripple dashes below.

Step 2: The hull

Start on the waves. Swoop up a round front, slope the deck down, stop on the waves. Add a rail.

Tip The rail is a line just inside the deck. No boat bottom: it's underwater.

Step 3: Porthole eyes

On the hull draw 2 big porthole eyes, a porthole apart. Add a pupil in each with a white sparkle.

Step 4: The smile

Start under the left eye. Draw one big wide U smile across and stop under the right eye.

Step 5: The house walls

Start on the deck, left of middle. Draw a big upside-down U with soft corners. Stop on the deck.

Tip The house is a box as wide as half the boat.

Step 6: The pointed roof

Start outside the top left wall corner. Draw up to a point above the middle, then down to the right.

Tip The roof pokes out a little past the walls.

Step 7: Chimney and smoke

Start on the roof's right slope. Draw a chimney up and back down to the roof. Add 3 smoke puffs.

Step 8: Door and window

From the deck by the left wall draw a tall arched door, down to the deck. Add a square window.

Tip Add a knob dot, and a cross of lines in the window.

Step 9: Life ring

Between the window and the right wall edge draw a fat ring with a smaller circle inside: a life ring.

Step 10: Cream walls, sky window

Colour the walls cream around the door, window and ring. Colour the window sky blue.

Step 11: Pink cheeks, teal hull

Add pink cheeks by the eyes. Colour the hull teal around the eyes, smile and cheeks. Leave the eyes white.

Step 12: Red roof, blue sea

Colour the roof, chimney, door and ring red. Colour the sea blue from the waves down.

Tip Leave the chimney top and the ring's middle white.
