How to Draw a Train Carriage

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a train carriage in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the long body.

Print

  1. Step 1: The long body

Across the middle of your paper, draw one long box, more than twice as wide as tall.

Tip Leave room under it for the wheels.

  2. Step 2: Rounded roof

Start at the box's top-right corner. Draw a low roof with round ends, and stop at the top-left corner.

  3. Step 3: Three big windows

In the middle of the box, draw 3 big windows with round corners, a finger apart.

  4. Step 4: Two doors

At each end of the box, draw a tall door with a small window in it.

  5. Step 5: Two heads

In the first and last big window, draw a round head. Leave a gap under it.

  6. Step 6: Shoulders

Under each head, draw a hill of shoulders. Start on the window's bottom edge and stop on that edge.

Tip The hill tucks in behind the head.

  7. Step 7: Friendly faces

Give each passenger a fringe line from side to side, 2 dot eyes and a smile.

Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each eye.

  8. Step 8: Frame and couplings

Under the box, draw a thin frame from end to end. Add a T-shaped coupling at each end.

  9. Step 9: Bogie bars

Under the frame, near each end, draw a long thin bar with round ends.

Tip Each bar is a bogie: it holds 2 wheels.

  10. Step 10: Wheels and rail

Behind each bar, draw 2 round wheels touching the frame. Draw a long rail under them, edge to edge.

  11. Step 11: Peach and brown

Colour the faces peach, under the fringe. Colour the hair brown.

  12. Step 12: Sky and yellow

Colour all the windows sky blue, around the passengers. Colour their shoulders yellow.

  13. Step 13: Blue carriage

Colour the body blue, around the windows. Colour the 2 doors red, around their windows.

  14. Step 14: Grey roof and wheels

Colour the roof, frame, couplings and bars dark grey. Colour the wheels light grey. Go over your lines.
