How to Draw an Hourglass
Draw an hourglass in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: top cap.
Step 1: Top cap
Near the top, draw a long flat cap with soft corners.
Step 2: The glass
From the cap, draw a line down that bulges, pinches to a tiny waist, and bulges again. Do both sides.
Tip Make the bottom bulb match the top one, and close it with a flat line at the bottom.
Step 3: Two big eyes
In the top bulb, draw 2 big eyes. Add a black dot, a big white shine and a tiny one.
Step 4: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw a small U smile. Add a small oval cheek beside each end, inside the glass.
Step 5: Bottom cap
Under the glass, draw the same flat cap upside down, joining the bottom of the glass.
Step 6: Two posts
Start on the top cap on each side. Draw a post down outside the glass, stopping on the bottom cap.
Step 7: The sand
Draw a sand smile in the top bulb and a hill in the bottom. Join them with a thin line.
Step 8: Glass shine
Inside the bottom bulb, start near the top left. Draw a short curve down the glass, stopping before the sand.
Step 9: Table and shadow
Draw a long table line under the bottom cap. Add a thin flat oval under it for its shadow.
Step 10: Sand and cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the sand light yellow and the cheeks pink.
Step 11: Sky glass
Colour the rest of the glass sky blue, around the sand and cheeks. Leave the eyes white.
Step 12: Wood and shadow
Colour the caps and posts wood brown and the shadow grey. Your hourglass is done!
