How to Draw the Horsehead Nebula
Draw the Horsehead Nebula in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the glowing cloud.
Step 1: The glowing cloud
Start low on the left. Draw a big wobbly arch up and over the top. Stop low on the right.
Tip A nebula is a giant cloud of glowing gas in space.
Step 2: The horse head
Draw a big horse head rising from the bottom of the paper, with 2 pointy ears and a long nose.
Step 3: Eye, smile and nostril
Draw 1 big round eye with a dot and a shine. Add a tiny smile and a nostril dot.
Step 4: Close the cloud
Start where the arch ended. Draw a wobbly line along the bottom and stop where the cloud began.
Step 5: The mane
Start under the ear. Draw 4 round bumps halfway down the neck. Rub out the neck line under them.
Step 6: Stars inside
Inside the cloud, draw 3 little stars: 1 on the left, 1 on the right and 1 low down.
Step 7: Stars around
Out in space, draw 4 more little stars, 1 near each corner.
Step 8: Yellow stars
Go over your lines. Colour all 7 stars yellow.
Step 9: Pink cloud
Colour the cloud pink, around the horse and the stars.
Step 10: Dark horse
Colour the horse and its mane dark navy blue. Leave the eye white. Your nebula is done!
