How to Draw a Horse Skeleton
Draw a horse skeleton in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the skull.
Step 1: The skull
On the left draw a long bony skull: a round top, a long straight face and a blunt nose.
Tip A skeleton is the bones inside: skull, backbone, ribs, hips and legs.
Step 2: Eye hole and nostril
Near the top of the skull draw an oval eye hole. Near the nose draw a small nostril hole.
Step 3: Jaw and teeth
Under the skull draw a long jaw, deep and round at the back. Draw 3 block teeth at the front.
Tip A horse has a gap with no teeth behind its front teeth.
Step 4: The backbone
Start at the skull. Draw the backbone down the neck and along a long back. Stop at the short tail.
Tip A horse holds its head up high on a long neck.
Step 5: Neck bones
From the skull down the neck draw 5 little ovals sitting on the backbone, like beads on a string.
Step 6: Hip and shoulder
Where the tail starts draw an oval hip bone on the backbone. Add a tall shoulder oval below the neck.
Step 7: Back and tail bones
Draw 5 ovals along the back. Draw 3 small ones down the tail, getting smaller toward the tip.
Step 8: Front leg
From the shoulder draw a long bone down to the knee, another bone down, then a hoof block.
Tip Each bone is a stick, fat at both ends and thin in the middle.
Step 9: Back leg
From the hip draw 3 bones in a zigzag: forward, back, then straight down to a hoof block.
Tip The back leg bends backwards halfway down. That bend is called the hock.
Step 10: Far legs
Draw 2 more legs the same way: one in front of the front leg, one behind the back leg.
Step 11: Ribs
From the back bones draw 5 curved ribs hanging down, longest in the middle. Join the ends with a curve.
Tip The ribs make a round cage, like a barrel.
Step 12: The ground
Start at the left side of the paper. Draw one long line under the hooves across to the right side.
Step 13: Cream bones
Colour all the bones cream, around the eye hole and nostril. Leave the teeth white.
Tip Go over your lines first.
Step 14: Grey holes
Colour the eye hole and the nostril grey. Your horse skeleton is done!
