How to Draw a Horse Lying Down

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a horse lying down in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: big round cheek, smaller nose end.

Tip The nose end points down to the left. Leave lots of room on the right.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw 1 big eye. Curve a line from the nose top down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.

Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. We only see one side, so only 1 eye.

  3. Step 3: Ears and forelock

On top of the head draw 2 pointed leaf ears. Add a fat lock of hair flopping onto the forehead.

Tip Draw a smaller leaf inside the nearer ear.

  4. Step 4: Thick neck

From behind the ear draw a line down to the right. From under the cheek draw another line down.

Tip The neck is thick and gets wider lower down. Stop both lines about halfway down the page.

  5. Step 5: Back and bottom

Carry on from the neck's back line. Draw a long back, curl round the bottom and stop low down.

Tip The bottom is big and round. Stop near the bottom of the page.

  6. Step 6: The mane

Start behind the ears. Draw 4 fat locks of hair down the neck, ending where the back begins.

Tip Each lock starts and ends on the neck line.

  7. Step 7: Folded front leg

Draw a ground line. From the chest draw a leg forward to a round knee, then back to a hoof.

Tip The leg folds in half. Add a fold line from the hoof towards the knee.

  8. Step 8: Back leg

From the back draw a big round thigh down to the ground. Under it add a leg and hoof.

Tip The thigh rests on the lower leg. The hoof points forward.

  9. Step 9: The far knee

From the top of the knee draw a round bump down to the ground. It is the other knee.

  10. Step 10: The tail

From the top of the bottom draw a long tail down to the ground. Add a hair line inside.

Tip Thick where it grows, pointed where it rests on the ground.

  11. Step 11: Nose and ear

Go over your lines. Colour the nose patch cream and the inside of the ear peach.

    Tip Leave the eye white.

  12. Step 12: Colour it tan

Colour the head, ears, neck, body and legs tan, around the cream nose and the peach ear.

Tip Leave the mane, the forelock, the tail and the hooves for later.

  13. Step 13: Mane, tail and hooves

Colour the mane, the forelock and the tail brown. Colour the 2 hooves dark grey.
