How to Draw a Horse-Drawn Plow

21 steps · Tricky · about 16 min

Draw a horse-drawn plow in 21 steps, about 16 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

On the left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: a big round cheek, a smaller nose end.

Tip Leave lots of room on the right for the plow and the farmer.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.

Tip Put the eye high on the head, with a black dot and a white shine.

  3. Step 3: Ears and forelock

On top of the head draw 2 pointed ears standing up. Add a petal of hair on the forehead.

  4. Step 4: The neck

From behind the ears, slope the neck's back to the shoulder. From the cheek, draw its front to the chest.

  5. Step 5: The body

From the neck draw a big bean body: a long back, a round bottom, then the tummy to the chest.

  6. Step 6: The mane

Start at the ears. Draw 4 fat petal locks along the back of the neck, down to the shoulders.

  7. Step 7: Two legs

Draw a long ground line. Add a front leg under the chest and a back leg under the bottom.

Tip Give each leg a knee bump and a flat doorstop hoof on the ground.

  8. Step 8: The far legs

Draw 2 thinner legs peeking out from behind: one by the front leg, one by the back leg.

  9. Step 9: The tail

From the top corner of the bottom, draw a long flowing tail down to a point.

  10. Step 10: Collar and strap

Draw a fat collar round the neck. From it draw a strap along the side, stopping past the tail.

Tip The strap is how the horse pulls the plow.

  11. Step 11: Soil and blade

Draw a small heap of soil on the ground behind the horse. Add a curved blade coming out of it.

  12. Step 12: Beam and handles

From the strap's end draw a bar down into the blade. Add 2 handles sloping up to the right.

  13. Step 13: Farmer's head and cap

On the right draw the farmer's egg head. Add a cap on top with its peak pointing left.

  14. Step 14: Farmer's face

Draw 2 round eyes with a black dot and a shine in each, and a smile under them.

  15. Step 15: Shirt and arms

Under the head draw a round shirt. Draw 2 arms reaching to the handles, with a fist on each.

Tip Bend each arm a little at the elbow.

  16. Step 16: Trousers and boots

Under the shirt draw 2 trouser legs spreading apart to 2 boots on the ground, toes pointing left.

  17. Step 17: Peach and cream

Go over your lines. Colour the farmer's face and fists peach and the horse's nose cream. Leave the eyes white.

  18. Step 18: Tan horse

Colour the horse tan, around the cream nose. Skip the mane, forelock, tail, hooves, collar and strap.

  19. Step 19: Blue shirt

Colour the farmer's shirt and arms blue.

  20. Step 20: Brown mane and trousers

Colour the mane, forelock, tail, cap, trousers and soil brown.

  21. Step 21: Grey plow, black boots

Colour the plow, collar, strap and hooves grey, and the boots black. Your plow is done!
