How to Draw a Hoodoo
Draw a hoodoo in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the spire.
Step 1: The spire
In the middle draw a tall bumpy rock spire, wide at the bottom, with a thin neck at the top.
Tip A hoodoo is a rock spire left standing when softer rock washed away.
Step 2: The cap rock
On top of the spire draw a wide, lumpy, flattish boulder that sticks out past the neck on both sides.
Step 3: Rock layers
Draw 4 gently curved lines across the spire at its narrow parts, from side to side, for rock layers.
Step 4: A small hoodoo
On the right draw a shorter spire the same way, with its own cap rock and 2 layer lines.
Step 5: The ground
Start at the left edge and draw the ground line across to the right edge.
Step 6: A mesa
Start at the left edge, draw the flat top of a mesa, then a sloping side down to the ground.
Step 7: Bush and rocks
Draw a low bumpy bush at the foot of the mesa, and 2 small rocks on the right.
Step 8: The sun
Draw a small sun with short rays near the top right corner.
Step 9: Ginger spires
Go over your lines, then colour both spires ginger orange, pressing softly so the layers still show.
Step 10: Stone caps, grey rocks
Colour the 2 cap rocks stone grey and the small rocks grey.
Step 11: Tan mesa, sandy ground
Colour the mesa tan and the ground sandy, right out to the edges of the paper.
Step 12: Green bush, yellow sun
Colour the bush green and the sun yellow, and your hoodoo is done!
