How to Draw a Highway
Draw a highway in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the road.
Step 1: The road
Draw a big shape with a wide flat bottom and a narrow flat top, like a road going far away.
Tip The sides lean in towards each other. Use a ruler if you like.
Step 2: The horizon
Start near the left edge. Draw a flat line and stop at the road's top corner. Repeat on the right.
Tip This is where the land meets the sky.
Step 3: The middle strip
Up the middle of the road draw a long thin strip, wide at the bottom and tiny at the top.
Tip Cars on each side of the strip drive in opposite directions.
Step 4: Left lane dashes
Halfway across the left side of the road draw 3 dashes. Make each one smaller as they go further away.
Tip Smaller dashes make the road look very long.
Step 5: Right lane dashes
Draw 3 matching dashes on the right side of the road, big at the bottom, small at the top.
Tip Line each one up with the dash across the road.
Step 6: Two hills
Start on the left horizon. Draw a round hill and stop on the horizon. Add a lower one further right.
Step 7: The road sign
On the right draw a big box above the grass, standing on 2 thin posts.
Tip Rub out the hill and the horizon line inside the sign.
Step 8: The arrow
In the middle of the sign draw a fat arrow pointing straight up.
Step 9: The sun
In the top left, above the big hill, draw a round sun with 8 short rays.
Step 10: Yellow sun, blue sky
Colour the sun yellow. Colour the sky light blue, around the sun, the hills and the sign.
Step 11: Green grass
Colour the grass and the middle strip light green. Colour the 2 hills dark green.
Step 12: Blue sign
Colour the sign blue, around the arrow. Leave the arrow white. Colour the 2 posts grey.
Step 13: Grey road
Colour the road dark grey, around the dashes. Leave them white. Your highway is done!
