How to Draw an Observatory
Draw an observatory in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the dome.
Step 1: The dome
Above the middle, start on the left. Draw a big dome like an upside-down bowl, ending level with the start.
Tip More than half the page wide.
Step 2: The tower
From each end of the dome draw a line down, a hand long. Join the bottoms with a gentle smile.
Step 3: The band
From the dome's left end draw a shallow smile across to the right end, and another just under it.
Step 4: The slit
On the dome draw a tall slot: from near the top, curve down to the band, and back up inside.
Tip The slit follows the curve of the dome, a finger thick.
Step 5: The telescope
From the slit draw a fat tube leaning up right, stopping in the sky, with a ring on the end.
Step 6: Door and windows
Start on the bottom line, draw a door with a rainbow top, stop on the line. Add 2 square windows.
Step 7: Moon and stars
In the top left draw a crescent moon: a C with a thinner C inside. Add 3 stars.
Step 8: Sparkles
Dot 2 tiny sparkles in the empty sky above the dome.
Step 9: The ground
Draw a ground line out from each bottom corner of the tower to the edge, with a little grass tuft.
Step 10: Yellow moon and stars
Colour the moon and the stars yellow.
Step 11: Cream tower, grey telescope
Colour the tower cream and the telescope grey.
Step 12: Slate dome, navy slit
Colour the dome slate grey and the slit navy, around the telescope. Go over your lines!
