How to Draw an Ellis Island

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw an ellis island in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the long base.

Print

  1. Step 1: The long base

Low down, start on the left. Draw a long flat base up, across and down, stopping level with the start.

Tip Keep the base low so there is room for the towers above it.

  2. Step 2: The middle block

Start on the base. Draw a tall block straight up, across the top, and down to stop on the base.

Tip This is the big hall where ships once brought people to America.

  3. Step 3: Two towers

Beside the block, start on the base. Draw 2 taller thin towers with flat caps, stopping on the base.

  4. Step 4: Tower domes

Start on each cap. Draw a tall round dome over the top and stop on the cap. Add a spike.

Tip The real domes are copper, which turns green in the rain.

  5. Step 5: Roof and far domes

Draw a low roof from tower to tower. Start on its top, draw 2 small spiked domes, stop on it.

  6. Step 6: Three tall arches

Start on the base. Draw 3 tall arches, each stopping on the base. Add a line across each, low down.

Tip Make the 3 arches the same height with even gaps between them.

  7. Step 7: Side wings

Start on the base near each end. Draw a low wing up and across, stopping on the tower.

  8. Step 8: Small windows

Draw 2 tall windows on each wing, and a little round-topped window near the top of each tower.

  9. Step 9: The water

Start left of the base. Draw a line along its bottom, stopping just past it. Add 2 little waves below.

Tip The building stands on an island, so there is water in front of it.

  10. Step 10: Light blue

Colour the 6 small windows, the top part of each arch and the water light blue.

  11. Step 11: Stone base

Colour the long base and the 2 tower caps stone grey.

  12. Step 12: Red brick walls

Colour the block, the 2 towers and the 2 wings brick red, around the windows and arches.

Tip Brick red is red with a little brown in it.

  13. Step 13: Green domes

Colour the 4 domes green and the roof dark grey.

  14. Step 14: Brown doors

Colour the 3 doors brown. Go over all your lines and your Ellis Island is done!
