How to Draw a Giant Ground Sloth
Draw a giant ground sloth in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: furry head.
Step 1: Furry head
Near the top, start on the left. Draw 5 fur hills across, round a wide cheek and chin, and back.
Tip Wider than tall, like a furry bun. No points, only soft bumps.
Step 2: Pale face
Inside the head draw a soft pear face: start under the middle hill, round the cheeks and chin, and back.
Tip Keep a gap from the head all the way round. The gap is fur.
Step 3: Dark eye patches
Above the middle of the face draw 2 teardrop patches, a round blob each, tails sweeping out to the edge.
Tip These patches give it a sloth's sleepy, friendly look.
Step 4: 2 big eyes
In the round end of each patch draw a big round eye with a black dot and a white shine.
Step 5: Nose and smile
Draw a black nose between the eyes. Under the patches draw a wide U smile from left to right.
Step 6: Giant body
Start under the left cheek. Draw a huge round tummy hanging down like a U, stopping under the right cheek.
Tip Much wider than the head and fattest near the bottom: this sloth was as big as an elephant.
Step 7: 2 long arms
From each shoulder draw a long banana arm hanging down beside the body to a round end, and back.
Tip The arms reach lower than the middle of the tummy.
Step 8: Hooked hand claws
Hang 3 long hooked claws from the round end of each arm.
Tip Each claw is fat at the top and curls to a point, like a banana.
Step 9: Feet on the ground
Draw a ground line. Under the tummy draw 2 plump feet standing on it, toes pointing out.
Step 10: Toe claws
Along the bottom of each foot draw 3 little hill claws standing on the ground.
Step 11: Thick tail
From the right hip draw a thick tail sloping down to lie on the ground, ending in a round tip.
Tip Fat where it leaves the body, thin at the tip. It helped the sloth stand up tall.
Step 12: Cream face
Colour the face cream around the 2 eye patches. Leave the eyes white.
Step 13: Colour the fur tan
Colour the fur tan around the face: the head, body, arms, feet and tail.
Tip Leave all the claws white for now.
Step 14: Brown patches and claws
Colour the 2 eye patches and all 12 claws brown.
