How to Draw a Salamander
Draw a salamander in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head and body.
Step 1: Head and body
Start at the top right. Draw a long sausage round a big head on the left. Stop below your start.
Tip Make the head a little taller than the body.
Step 2: Long pointed tail
Start at the top end. Draw a long tail tapering back to a point, then stop at the bottom end.
Tip The tail lines flow straight on from the body, no bump where they join.
Step 3: Big round eye
In the head, above the middle, draw a big round eye. Add a black pupil and a white shine.
Step 4: Grin and nostril
Start at the front of the snout. Draw a long grin back under the eye, curling up. Dot a nostril.
Step 5: Front leg
Start under the throat. Draw a short bent leg down to a foot with 3 round toes, and back up.
Tip Rub out the tummy line across the top of the leg.
Step 6: Back leg
Start on the tummy near the tail. Draw a short bent leg to a 3-toed foot, and back up.
Tip Rub out the tummy line across the top of this leg too.
Step 7: Far legs
Just behind each leg, draw the far leg peeking out: a thin strip down to its foot.
Step 8: The log
Draw a long log with round ends right under the feet. Lift your pencil at each foot.
Step 9: Round spots
Draw 6 round spots: 1 on the head, 3 along the back and 2 on the tail.
Step 10: Orange spots
Colour all 6 spots bright orange.
Step 11: Wood brown log
Colour the log wood brown.
Step 12: Slate grey salamander
Colour the head, body, legs, feet and tail slate grey, around the orange spots. Keep the eye white.
