How to Draw a Blue Jay
Draw a blue jay in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head and pointy tuft.
Step 1: Head and pointy tuft
Near the top left draw a big round head. At the back, sweep the line up into a pointy tuft.
Step 2: Stubby beak
Start on the front of the head. Draw a short fat triangle beak out left, back to the head.
Step 3: Eye and white face
Behind it draw a round eye. Start above the beak, draw a C over the eye, stop at the chin.
Step 4: Plump body
From the back of the head draw a curve down to the tail, round a belly, up to the chin.
Tip The body is narrower than the head, so the head stays big.
Step 5: Fan tail
From the back end draw a fan pointing down and back, wide at the end. Add 2 feather lines.
Step 6: Wing and necklace
From the head draw a wing down to the rump, with 2 feather lines. Add a necklace band.
Tip The necklace band runs from the wing to the front of the chest.
Step 7: Front leg and toes
Under the tummy draw a short skinny leg, then 3 chubby toes curling down like a mitten.
Step 8: Back leg and toes
A thumb behind the first leg draw a second leg and toes the same way. Leave a gap between.
Step 9: Branch
Under the toes draw a long stick with round ends. The toes wrap over its front.
Step 10: Blue feathers
Colour the head, tuft, wing and fan tail blue. Leave the face, eye and chest white.
Step 11: Grey legs, brown branch
Colour the legs and toes grey. Colour the branch brown, around the toes.
Step 12: Black beak and necklace
Colour the beak and the necklace band black. Your blue jay is done!
