How to Draw a Griffin
Draw a griffin in 17 steps, about 13 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big soft head.
Step 1: Big soft head
Near the top left draw a big soft head, wider than tall, with round cheeks and a flat top.
Tip The head is almost as long as the body. Leave room on the right.
Step 2: Hook beak
Low on the left of the head draw a big beak poking out. It hooks down to a point.
Tip Rub out the head line inside the beak.
Step 3: Big eyes
Above the beak draw 2 big oval eyes with black dots. The left eye is a little narrower.
Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each eye.
Step 4: Feather tufts
On each top corner of the head draw a pointed feather tuft, like a leaf. The left one is smaller.
Step 5: Long back
Start on the head, level with the eyes. Draw a long back, curl round the bottom, stop below chin level.
Tip The line dips down the neck, then runs almost flat.
Step 6: Front leg
Draw a ground line. From under the chin, draw a leg down to a plump foot, then back up.
Tip The leg leans forward and gets thinner near the foot.
Step 7: Feather ruff
Start on the back by the head. Draw 3 feather bumps round the neck. Stop on the front leg line.
Step 8: Tummy and back leg
From the front leg draw the tummy. Then a round thigh down to a paw and up to the bottom.
Tip The back leg bends just above the paw.
Step 9: Far legs
Under the tummy draw 2 more legs peeking out: one leaning back, one leaning forward.
Tip Only part of each far leg shows. All 4 feet sit on the ground.
Step 10: Toes
On each big foot draw 2 short curved toe lines. Draw 1 on each small foot.
Step 11: Bird feet
Draw a curved line across each front leg, just above the foot, from one side to the other.
Tip The front feet are eagle feet. The back feet are lion paws.
Step 12: Big wing
Start on the back behind the ruff. Sweep up to a round tip, then 3 feather bumps down again.
Tip The wing tip is the highest thing in your drawing.
Step 13: Wing feathers
From each dip between the feather bumps, draw a short line slanting down into the wing.
Step 14: Lion tail
Start on top of the bottom. Draw a tail curving up, thinner at the end. Add a fat pointed tuft.
Tip The tuft is like a paintbrush tip.
Step 15: Yellow beak and feet
Colour the beak and the 2 front feet yellow.
Step 16: Tan lion body
Colour the body, legs, back paws and tail tan, around the yellow feet. Leave the head and ruff white.
Step 17: Brown wing
Colour the wing, the 2 head tufts and the tail tuft brown. Leave the eyes white.
