How to Draw a Grevy’s Zebra

19 steps · Tricky · about 14 min

Draw a Grevy’s zebra in 19 steps, about 14 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: a big round cheek and a smaller nose.

Tip The nose end leans down to the left. Leave room on the right for the body.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.

Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. Only 1 eye: we see the side.

  3. Step 3: Big round ears

On top of the head draw a big round-tipped ear with a leaf inside, and a second ear behind.

Tip A Grevy's zebra has big, wide, round ears, like a mule.

  4. Step 4: The neck

From behind the ears, slope the back neck line down to the middle. From under the cheek, draw the front.

Tip The front line ends lower, at the chest, so the neck gets wider as it goes down.

  5. Step 5: The body

From the neck draw a big bean body: long back, round bottom, then the tummy up to the chest.

Tip Rub out the neck lines inside the body.

  6. Step 6: The mane

Start behind the ears. Draw a mane of soft bumps standing up along the neck, down to the back.

Tip A Grevy's zebra's mane stands straight up, like a brush.

  7. Step 7: Two legs

Draw a ground line low down. Add a front leg under the chest and a back leg under the bottom.

Tip Each hoof is a flat little doorstop on the ground. The back leg bends.

  8. Step 8: The far legs

Draw 2 thinner legs peeking out from behind: one by the front leg, one by the back leg.

Tip Only draw the parts you can see.

  9. Step 9: The tail

From the top corner of the bottom draw a thin tail hanging down, ending in a leaf-shaped tuft.

  10. Step 10: Neck stripes

Draw 3 thin stripes across the neck. Start each one at the mane and stop before the throat.

Tip Keep the stripes thin, with wide white gaps between them.

  11. Step 11: Body stripes

Draw 6 thin stripes hanging from the back line. Stop each one above the tummy.

Tip A Grevy's zebra has the thinnest stripes of all zebras, and a white tummy.

  12. Step 12: Rump stripes

On the round bottom, draw 3 thin stripes that start at the back edge and point forwards.

  13. Step 13: Leg stripes

Draw 3 thin bands across each of the first 2 legs and 2 across each far leg.

Tip Stop the bands above the hooves.

  14. Step 14: Face stripes

Draw 3 short thin stripes on top of the nose, between the nose patch and the eye.

Tip Keep them away from the eye.

  15. Step 15: Grey nose, peach ear

Go over your lines. Colour the nose grey and the front ear's inside peach. Leave the body and eye white.

  16. Step 16: Grey hooves

Colour the 4 hooves dark grey.

  17. Step 17: Black mane

Colour the mane, the tail tuft and the stripes on the face and neck black.

  18. Step 18: Black body stripes

Colour the stripes on the body and the round bottom black.

  19. Step 19: Black leg stripes

Colour the stripes on the legs black. Your zebra is done!
