How to Draw a French Horn

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a French horn in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the big coil.

Print

  1. Step 1: The big coil

Left of the middle draw a big circle, nearly a hand wide, for the coil of tube.

Tip A French horn is one long tube coiled round in a circle.

  2. Step 2: Inner circle

Just inside it draw a second circle, only a finger smaller, so the coil is a thin tube.

Tip Keep the middle big and empty, so you can see the paper through it.

  3. Step 3: Bell tube

From the coil's lower right draw 2 lines going right, close together, then sweeping wide apart. Stop near the edge.

Tip Rub out the short bit of circle between the 2 lines, so the tube flows into the bell.

  4. Step 4: Bell opening

Where the 2 lines end, draw a tall oval standing up for the opening of the bell.

  5. Step 5: Lead pipe

From the coil's top left, draw a thin tube curling up and out, stopping near the top left corner.

  6. Step 6: Mouthpiece

On the end of the lead pipe draw a little cup that gets wider at the tip.

  7. Step 7: Valve tube

A little above the centre of the empty middle, draw 2 lines from one side across to the other.

Tip The 2 lines make a thin tube for the valves to sit on.

  8. Step 8: 3 round valves

On the valve tube draw 3 small circles in a row, side by side.

Tip Rub out the tube lines inside each circle.

  9. Step 9: Valve levers

Start on top of each valve. Draw a short stick up, ending in a tiny circle.

  10. Step 10: Music notes

Draw a music note high on the right and one low on the left: a dot, stem and flag.

  11. Step 11: Brass yellow

Go over your lines, then colour the coil, bell and lead pipe yellow like brass. Leave the middle empty.

  12. Step 12: Orange and grey

Colour inside the bell oval orange. Colour the mouthpiece, valve tube, valves and lever tips grey.

  13. Step 13: Blue notes

Colour the music notes blue. Your French horn is ready to play!
