How to Draw a Firefly

Step 1: Egg head

Near the top, draw a big wide egg head on its side, with full round cheeks and a smaller chin.

Tip Leave room above for the feelers and lots below for the body.

Step 2: Two antennae

Start on the head near the top. Draw a short curve up and out, ending in a ball. Same right.

Step 3: Two big eyes

Below the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes one eye apart. Add black dots and shines.

Step 4: Smile and cheeks

Start under the left eye. Draw a wide U smile and stop under the right eye. Add round cheeks.

Step 5: The body

Start at the left cheek. Draw a long egg body down to a round tail, up to the right cheek.

Step 6: Belt and wing line

Near the bottom, draw 2 close smile lines side to side. Draw a line from the chin down to them.

Tip The middle line splits the hard wing covers. Everything under the belt will glow.

Step 7: Big wings

Start under the left cheek. Draw a fat teardrop wing up beside the head, back to the body. Same right.

Step 8: Front legs

High on each side, draw a leg out to a knee, then thinner down to a small round foot.

Tip Fat at the body, thin at the ankle, like a boomerang.

Step 9: Four more legs

Under the front legs, draw 2 more legs on each side the same way, each with a small foot.

Tip A firefly is a beetle, so it has 6 legs.

Step 10: Glow lines and moon

Round the tail, draw 5 short straight glow lines fanning out like sun rays. Add a crescent moon top left.

Tip It is night time: the moon and glow lines show the tail shining.

Step 11: Yellow glow, pink cheeks

Colour the tail under the belt and the moon bright yellow. Colour the round cheeks pink.

Step 12: Brown head, light wings

Colour the head reddish brown around the eyes and cheeks. Leave the eyes white. Colour the wings light grey.

Step 13: Dark body, black belt

Colour the body above the belt and all 6 legs dark grey. Colour the belt and antenna balls black.
