How to Draw a Jewel Beetle

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a jewel beetle in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: small head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Small head

Near the top of your paper, in the middle, draw a small egg lying on its side.

  2. Step 2: Short antennae

Start on top of the head and curve up and out. Stop at a tiny ball. Do both sides.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

Below the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes one eye apart. Add a black dot in each.

  4. Step 4: Smile and cheeks

Under the eyes draw an open smile: a flat top and a U underneath. Add a cheek beside each corner.

  5. Step 5: Narrow collar

Under the chin, draw a short wide collar with a flat bottom, a little wider than the head.

  6. Step 6: Long pointed wings

From the collar, draw the wing cases as one long bullet pointing down. Add a line down the middle.

Tip Widest at the shoulders, pointed at the tail, much longer than wide.

  7. Step 7: Shiny streaks

On each wing case draw one long thin leaf shape, like a streak of light on shiny metal.

  8. Step 8: Six bent legs

Down each side draw 3 bent legs with pointed feet: front pair up, middle pair out, back pair down.

Tip Legs are fat at the body and thin at the foot; none touch.

  9. Step 9: The leaf

Behind the beetle draw a big pointed leaf with a short stem. Add veins from the beetle toward the edges.

Tip Every vein starts on the beetle, so none go under it.

  10. Step 10: Yellow leaf, pink cheeks

Colour the leaf and stem golden yellow, around the beetle. Colour the cheeks pink. Leave the eyes white.

  11. Step 11: Red mouth, teal head

Colour the mouth red. Colour the head, collar, legs, antenna balls and streaks teal, around the cheeks and mouth.

  12. Step 12: Green wing cases

Colour the wing cases green, around the teal streaks. Go over your lines and your jewel beetle is done!
