How to Draw a Ferry

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a ferry in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the waves.

Print

  1. Step 1: The waves

Start at the left edge, below the middle. Draw gentle wave bumps right across, stopping at the right edge.

Tip Little hills, not spikes, all the same size. Add a few ripple dashes.

  2. Step 2: The hull

Start on the waves. Sweep up for the round front, slope the deck down right, and stop on the waves.

Tip Never draw the bottom of the boat: it is under the water.

  3. Step 3: Porthole eyes

On the hull draw 2 big round porthole eyes, one porthole apart. Colour a pupil in each, leaving a sparkle.

  4. Step 4: The smile

Start under the left eye. Draw one big wide U smile across, and stop under the right eye.

  5. Step 5: The rim

Start just under the front tip. Draw a second line close under the deck, and stop at the back.

  6. Step 6: The cabin

Start on the deck near the front. Draw a long low cabin almost to the back, down to the deck.

Tip Nearly the whole length of the deck: a ferry carries lots of people.

  7. Step 7: The funnel

Start on the roof near the back. Draw a short chimney, wider on top, back down to the roof.

Tip About as tall as it is wide, with a sagging stripe near the top.

  8. Step 8: Smoke puffs

Draw a smoke puff on the funnel. From it draw a bigger puff up right, back to the first one.

Tip Each puff is bigger than the last; do it once more on top.

  9. Step 9: Six windows

Along the cabin, under the roof, draw a row of 6 small square windows with round corners, a finger apart.

Tip Line the tops up and the bottoms up so the row looks neat.

  10. Step 10: The bridge

Start on the roof by the funnel. Draw a small soft box, back down to the roof. Add 2 windows.

Tip The bridge is where the captain stands, about half as tall as the cabin.

  11. Step 11: Yellow funnel, grey smoke

Colour the funnel yellow, going around the stripe. Colour the 3 puffs of smoke grey.

  12. Step 12: Pink cheeks, sky windows

Add 2 pink cheeks beside the eyes. Colour all the windows sky blue.

  13. Step 13: Blue sea and hull

Colour the sea light blue, then the hull and funnel stripe blue, going around the eyes and cheeks. Anchors aweigh!

    Tip Leave the eyes white.
