How to Draw an Elephant

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big soft head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big soft head

Start low, just left of the middle. Draw a big soft head round, stopping 2 fingers from where you began.

Tip Leave that gap for the trunk. The head is almost half the elephant, with fat cheeks.

  2. Step 2: Curly trunk

Above the gap, draw a rainbow 2 fingers wide. From its ends, draw a trunk curling up at the tip.

Tip Fat at the rainbow, thin at the curl. Its sides pass down through the gap.

  3. Step 3: Eyes and smile

A finger each side of the rainbow, draw a big round eye with a shine. Add a smile under each.

Tip The eyes sit just above the rainbow. The smiles peek out behind the trunk.

  4. Step 4: Huge fan ears

Start high on each side. Draw a huge fan out past the head, curling back to the cheek.

Tip Elephant ears are widest at the top, so go wide up top!

  5. Step 5: Inside the ears

Inside each ear, start on the head line. Draw one curve following the ear's edge, ending back on the head.

Tip This curve is the edge of the soft pink part of the ear.

  6. Step 6: Tusks and wrinkles

Under the chin, draw a little banana tusk each side of the trunk. Draw 3 rainbows across the trunk.

Tip Tusks are short and stubby on a baby elephant.

  7. Step 7: Body and ground

Start where each ear meets the cheek. Draw a big C down and out, stopping level with the trunk's curl.

Tip The body is like a pear. Draw a ground line 2 fingers lower.

  8. Step 8: Fat front legs

Start at the bottom of each body line. Draw a fat leg down to a wide foot, back up inside.

Tip Join the 2 legs with a sagging tummy. Feet are wider than ankles.

  9. Step 9: Toenails and back feet

Add 3 toenail bumps per foot. Outside each, start on the ground, draw a low bun, end on the leg.

Tip Back feet hide behind the front legs. Give each one toenail.

  10. Step 10: Tufted tail

Start on the body's right side. Draw a thin tail curving down to a tuft, then back to the body.

Tip Thick at the body, thinner toward the tuft. The tuft hangs above the ground.

  11. Step 11: Pink and cream

Colour the inside of each ear pink and dab pink on each cheek. Colour the tusks and toenails cream.

  12. Step 12: Colour it grey

Colour the elephant grey, around the pink and cream parts. Keep the eyes white.
