How to Draw an Electric Motor
Draw an electric motor in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the body.
Step 1: The body
In the middle of your paper, draw a big box with soft corners, nearly as tall as it is wide.
Tip Leave room on both sides for the caps and the shaft.
Step 2: The fan cover
Start on the box's left edge near the top. Draw a narrow round-cornered cap and stop near the bottom.
Tip A fan inside this cover keeps the motor cool.
Step 3: The front cap
Start on the box's right edge near the top. Draw a narrower cap and stop near the bottom.
Step 4: The shaft
From the middle of the front cap, draw a long thin bar sticking out to the right.
Tip The shaft is the part that spins.
Step 5: The wire box
Start on the body's top edge. Draw a small flat box with soft corners and stop back on the edge.
Tip The wires go in here.
Step 6: Two feet
From the body's bottom edge, draw 2 small feet that get wider and end with a flat bottom.
Tip Put one foot near each end of the body.
Step 7: The ground
Start near the left edge. Draw a ground line under both feet and stop near the right edge.
Step 8: Cooling fins
Across the body, draw 2 lines near the top and 2 near the bottom, from edge to edge.
Tip Leave a wide clear band in the middle.
Step 9: Lightning bolt
In the middle of the clear band, draw a zigzag lightning bolt.
Tip The bolt shows that the motor runs on electricity.
Step 10: Air slots
On the fan cover, draw 3 short lines, one above the other.
Step 11: Yellow bolt, grey caps
Go over your lines. Colour the bolt yellow. Colour the fan cover, the front cap and the shaft grey.
Step 12: Blue body
Colour the body blue, around the lightning bolt.
Step 13: Dark box and feet
Colour the wire box and the 2 feet dark grey. Your electric motor is ready to spin!
