How to Draw a Dungeon Map

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a dungeon map in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the paper.

Print

  1. Step 1: The paper

In the middle of your paper draw a big box for the map, a little wider than it is tall.

  2. Step 2: Two rolls

Down each side of the map draw a tall bar poking out past the top and bottom.

Tip These are the rolled-up ends of the map.

  3. Step 3: Roll ends

On each end of each roll draw a small flat oval with a tiny circle inside.

  4. Step 4: Three rooms

On the map draw 3 boxes for rooms: a tall one on the right and 2 on the left.

Tip A dungeon map shows the rooms from above, like looking down through the roof.

  5. Step 5: Two corridors

Start on the top left room. Draw 2 lines down, stopping at the room below. Join the right room too.

Tip Corridors are the narrow passages between the rooms.

  6. Step 6: The stairs

In the bottom room draw a small box with 3 lines down it. These are the stairs in.

Tip On a map, a box of stripes means stairs.

  7. Step 7: A dotted path

Start above the stairs. Dot a path up the corridor, across the top one and into the right room.

Tip Keep the dots the same size and the same distance apart.

  8. Step 8: The big X

Where the path ends, draw a big fat X to mark the treasure.

    Tip X marks the spot!

  9. Step 9: A compass

In the bottom right corner draw a 4-pointed star. Add a small circle round its middle for a compass.

  10. Step 10: The ground

Draw a ground line under the map, from well left of it to well right.

  11. Step 11: Sand map

Go over your lines. Colour the paper sand, around the rooms, corridors and compass star. Colour the rolls tan.

  12. Step 12: Grey floors

Colour the 3 rooms and the 2 corridors grey, around the big X.

  13. Step 13: Red X

Colour the X and the compass star red. Your dungeon map is ready!
