How to Draw a Dragon Skeleton

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a dragon skeleton in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the skull.

Print

  1. Step 1: The skull

Near the top left draw a long skull: blunt nose on the left, low snout, tall round back.

Tip A skeleton is the bones inside: skull, backbone, ribs, hips, legs and wings.

  2. Step 2: Horn and holes

Sweep a long horn back from the top of the skull. Add an eye hole and a nostril.

Tip Fat where it leaves the skull, thin at the tip.

  3. Step 3: Teeth and jaw

Zigzag pointy teeth along the top jaw, starting and stopping on it. From the back draw an open bottom jaw.

Tip The jaw hangs from the back of the skull, like a door hinge.

  4. Step 4: The backbone

Start at the skull's back. Curve down the neck, along the back, down the tail. Stop low on the right.

Tip A dragon has a long bendy neck, like a swan.

  5. Step 5: Shoulder and hip

On the level part of the backbone draw 2 oval bones: a small shoulder first, a bigger hip behind.

  6. Step 6: Neck and back bones

Draw 6 little ovals down the neck and 2 along the back, like beads on a string.

  7. Step 7: Tail bones

Along the tail draw 5 more ovals, getting smaller. Finish with a pointed spade at the tip.

  8. Step 8: Ribs

Start on the backbone between the shoulder and hip. Draw 3 curved ribs hanging down, ending in the air.

Tip Like the bars of a cage.

  9. Step 9: The wing

From the shoulder zigzag 2 bones up, with round knobs. Fan 3 long finger bones out from the top.

Tip A dragon's wing is a giant hand. Skin stretches between the fingers.

  10. Step 10: Front legs

From the shoulder draw 2 legs: a bone down to a knee, a shin, an ankle and 3 toes.

Tip Each bone is a stick, fat at both ends and thin in the middle.

  11. Step 11: Back legs

Do the same from the hip: 2 more legs, each with a knee, a shin, an ankle and 3 toes.

  12. Step 12: The ground

Start at the left side of the paper. Draw one long line under the toes across to the right side.

  13. Step 13: Cream bones

Go over your lines. Colour all the bones cream, around the eye hole and nostril.

  14. Step 14: Brown horn, grey holes

Colour the horn light brown. Colour the eye hole and the nostril grey. Your dragon skeleton is done!
