How to Draw a Dragon Hatchling

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a dragon hatchling in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a big egg head.

Print

  1. Step 1: A big egg head

Near the top of your paper draw a big egg, fat side down. It is most of the hatchling.

Tip A bit fatter at the cheeks, flatter at the bottom. A wobble is fine.

  2. Step 2: Two little horns

On top of the head draw 2 curved horns leaning apart. Each starts and stops on the head line.

Tip Each horn is a banana standing on end, a quarter of the head tall.

  3. Step 3: Eyes and cheeks

Just below the middle of the head draw 2 big egg eyes with black dots. Add a cheek under each.

Tip Leave a tiny white speck in each dot for the shine.

  4. Step 4: Snout and nostrils

Under the eyes draw a wide flat oval snout. Add 2 small dot nostrils near its top.

Tip Keep the nostrils small and close together.

  5. Step 5: Smile and fang

Start on the snout's left edge. Draw a smile under it, stop on the right edge. Hang a tiny fang.

  6. Step 6: Round tummy

Start inside the left cheek. Draw a round tummy down and up to the right cheek. Add a tall oval.

Tip The tummy is narrower than the head. Draw 2 curved bands across the oval.

  7. Step 7: Two small bat wings

Start on the tummy under each cheek. Draw a small wing out to a point, then 2 wavy bumps back.

Tip Tiny wings, as wide as an eye. Add 2 lines from shoulder to points.

  8. Step 8: Spade tail

On the right of the tummy, below the wing, draw a tail sweeping out and up to a point.

Tip Add a triangle on the tip. Fat at the tummy, thin at the end.

  9. Step 9: The broken egg

Draw a broken eggshell round the tummy: a zigzag, then a big U. Add 3 spots and a ground line.

Tip Rub out every tummy, plate and band line inside the shell.

  10. Step 10: Leaf plate, tan horns

Colour the belly plate and the snout a lighter leaf green, and the 2 horns tan.

  11. Step 11: Pink cheeks, teal spots

Colour the 2 cheeks pink and the 3 shell spots teal. Leave the rest of the shell white.

  12. Step 12: Green dragon, purple wings

Colour the head, tummy and tail green, around the plate, snout and cheeks. Colour the wings and spade purple.

    Tip Leave the eyes white.
