How to Draw a Dirt Road

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a dirt road in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the winding track.

Print

  1. Step 1: The winding track

Start at the bottom, left of the middle. Draw a long S winding up to the middle of the page.

Tip Stop a little above the middle. That is the far end of the track.

  2. Step 2: The other edge

Start at the bottom right corner. Draw a second S that ends right beside the first tip.

Tip The gap shrinks all the way up, so the track looks far away.

  3. Step 3: The horizon

Start at the left edge. Draw a flat line across to the right edge, touching the tip of the track.

  4. Step 4: A far hill

Start on the horizon left of the track tip. Draw a big round hill and stop on the horizon.

Tip The track runs all the way to the foot of this hill.

  5. Step 5: Wheel ruts

Inside the track draw 2 long lines that follow its bends. Stop them before the far tip.

Tip These are the marks that cart wheels leave in the dirt.

  6. Step 6: Fence posts

On the grass at the right draw 3 posts with round tops. Make each one smaller going back.

Tip The biggest post is nearest to you.

  7. Step 7: Fence rails

Join each post to the next with 2 straight rails, one high and one low.

  8. Step 8: Two stones

On the track, between the ruts, draw 2 little oval stones. The far one is smaller.

  9. Step 9: Grass tufts

On the grass at the left draw 2 tufts: 3 short blades each, fanning out from one spot.

  10. Step 10: A cloud

High in the sky on the left draw a puffy cloud: 3 bumps on top and a flat bottom.

  11. Step 11: Blue sky

Colour the sky light blue, around the cloud and the hill. Colour the 2 stones grey.

  12. Step 12: Green grass

Colour the grass light green on both sides of the track, around the fence posts.

  13. Step 13: Hill and fence

Colour the far hill dark green. Colour the 3 fence posts dark brown.

  14. Step 14: Brown dirt track

Colour the track light brown, around the stones. Your dirt road is ready for a walk!
