How to Draw a Hoatzin
Draw a hoatzin in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head with punk hair.
Step 1: Head with punk hair
Near the top left draw a round head. On top draw 7 stiff spikes zigzagging up and down, leaning back.
Tip The spiky hair is the hoatzin's special thing.
Step 2: Short beak
From the head's front draw a short fat beak out left and back to it. Add a smiling mouth line.
Step 3: One big eye
A finger behind the beak draw a round eye with a big black dot and a white speck.
Step 4: Bare blue face
Round the eye draw a soft oval, a little clear of the eye all the way round.
Tip Keep the oval small, with tan head showing all round it.
Step 5: Plump body
Start at the back of the head. Draw down, round a fat tummy, and up to stop under the beak.
Tip The body is a plump egg under the head, narrower than the head.
Step 6: Long fan tail
From the rump draw a long fan to a wide round end, back to the tummy. Add 2 feather lines.
Step 7: Folded wing
Start under the back of the head. Draw a round shoulder, then sweep back to a point on the rump.
Step 8: Front leg and toes
Start on the tummy. Draw a short leg down, 2 chubby toes forward, one back, and up to the tummy.
Tip The toes curl down, ready to grip the branch.
Step 9: Back leg and toes
A thumb behind it, start on the tummy again. Draw a second leg and toes the same way.
Step 10: The branch
From the left edge below the toes, draw a branch across, hopping over each toe, round the end and back.
Step 11: Tan head, blue face
Colour the head and spikes tan, and the face oval light blue around the eye.
Step 12: Orange tummy, red eye
Colour the chest and tummy warm orange, and the eye red around the black dot.
Step 13: Brown feathers, black beak
Colour the back, wing, tail, legs and branch brown, pressing lightly. Colour the beak black.
