How to Draw a Dim Sum Steamer
Draw a dim sum steamer in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the rim.
Step 1: The rim
A little above the middle draw a wide oval, about a hand across, with another oval just inside.
Step 2: The top basket
Start at the oval's left end. Go down a little, curve round under it, and stop at the right end.
Tip Dim sum comes in round bamboo steamers stacked up.
Step 3: A second basket
From the left corner draw a slightly taller basket underneath, curving round the bottom up to the right corner.
Step 4: Weave lines
Across each basket draw one curved line from side to side. Add 2 short lines down from each one.
Step 5: A big bun
Inside the oval, left of the middle, draw a big round bun with a knot and 3 pleat lines.
Step 6: A shumai
Right of the bun draw a dumpling with a frilly top and 3 pleats. Add a filling and a pea.
Step 7: A dumpling
At the left, in front of the bun, draw a small half-round dumpling with 3 short pleat lines on top.
Step 8: The lid
Leaning on the right of the stack draw a tall thin oval lid, with a second oval inside.
Step 9: Steam
Above the basket draw 2 wiggly steam lines going up.
Step 10: The table
Draw a line under the bottom basket from far left to far right, just touching it.
Step 11: White bun, cream dumplings
Colour the big bun white, and the shumai wrapper and the dumpling cream.
Step 12: Tan baskets, wood lid
Colour the baskets tan, around the bun, the shumai and the dumpling. Colour the lid wood brown.
Step 13: Brown filling, green pea
Colour the shumai filling brown and the pea green. Your dim sum is ready!
