How to Draw a Detective

Draw a detective in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Step 1: The head
Near the top of your paper, in the middle, draw an egg head, a little narrower at the chin.
Tip Leave most of the page below for the body and legs.
Step 2: The face
Draw 2 big eyes, a tiny nose and a smile. Each C ear starts and ends on the head line.
Step 3: Detective hat
Draw a wide brim above the eyebrows. From it, draw a crown up, dipping on top, down to the brim.
Tip Add a band line across the crown, and rub out the head line inside the hat.
Step 4: Neck and trench coat
From a short neck, draw a long coat with round shoulders, down to a hem below the knees.
Step 5: Lapels, belt and buttons
Draw lapel lines from the neck to a V, a line down to the hem, a belt and 2 buttons.
Tip The buttons sit above the belt.
Step 6: Long sleeves
From each shoulder, draw a long sleeve down to the wrist. The right hangs straight, the left bends in.
Tip Rub out the coat lines inside the sleeves. Add a cuff line near the right wrist.
Step 7: Mitten hands
Draw a mitten hanging from the right sleeve and one pointing in from the left, each with a thumb.
Step 8: Magnifying glass
From the left hand, draw a handle up, stopping at a big ring, like a lollipop. Add an inner circle.
Step 9: Trousers, shoes and ground
From the coat hem, draw 2 trouser legs down, back up to the hem. Add shoes and a ground line.
Step 10: Peach skin, pink cheeks
Colour the cheeks pink and the face, ears, neck and hands peach around them. Leave the eyes white.
Step 11: Sky glass, tan coat
Colour the glass sky blue. Colour the coat, sleeves and hat tan, but not the hat band.
Step 12: Brown trousers, black shoes
Colour the hat band, handle and trousers brown and the shoes black. Go over your lines and you're done!
