How to Draw a Columbine
Draw a columbine in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the arching stalk.
Step 1: The arching stalk
Start low on the left. Draw a stalk that gets thinner going up, arching over and bending straight down.
Tip A columbine nods, so its flower hangs down from the tip.
Step 2: The cup
Under the stalk tip, draw a cup hanging upside down, with 3 round bumps along its bottom edge.
Step 3: Pointed petals
Behind the cup, draw 4 pointed petals flaring out like a star, 2 to the sides and 2 lower down.
Tip A columbine has 5 pointed petals, but the fifth hides behind the cup.
Step 4: Spurs
From behind the top of the cup, draw 2 curved spurs on each side of the stalk, with round tips.
Tip A columbine has 5 spurs, but the fifth hides behind the stalk.
Step 5: Stamens
Under the middle of the cup, draw a little tuft with 3 round bumps peeking out.
Step 6: A bud
Halfway up the stalk, draw a side stalk curving out left, with a teardrop bud hanging from its end.
Step 7: Leaves
Low on the stalk, draw a short stalk out each side, each ending in a leaf with 3 round lobes.
Step 8: Ground and grass
Draw a ground line from near the left edge to near the right. Add a grass tuft near each end.
Step 9: Cream cup
Colour the cup cream.
Step 10: Yellow stamens
Colour the little tuft under the cup yellow.
Step 11: Purple petals and spurs
Colour the pointed petals, the spurs and the bud purple.
Step 12: Green stalks and leaves
Colour the stalks and the leaves green, and your columbine is done!
