How to Draw Climbing a Tree

Draw climbing a tree in 15 steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Step 1: The head
Near the top of your paper, right of the middle, draw a smallish egg head, narrower at the chin.
Tip The kid sits up on a branch, with the trunk on the left.
Step 2: The face
Draw 2 big eyes, each with a big black dot and a shine, then a small nose and a smile.
Step 3: Ears
Start on each side of the head. Draw a C ear out and back to the head.
Step 4: Tufty hair
Start on the left side of the head. Draw soft round tufts over the top, down to the right side.
Step 5: Striped T-shirt
Start under the chin with 2 neck lines. Draw a boxy striped T-shirt with short sleeves, back to the neck.
Step 6: Arms
From each sleeve draw an arm down to the wrist, bending a little at the elbow, stopping beside the knees.
Step 7: Hands
On each wrist draw a fist pointing down: a fat egg with a thumb bump and a curved finger line.
Step 8: Shorts and knees
Start at the bottom left of the shirt. Draw a wide rounded shape round both knees, back to the right.
Tip The knees come toward you because the kid is sitting.
Step 9: Dangling legs
Start under each knee and draw a leg down, narrower to the ankle, stopping above the ground. Add a shoe.
Step 10: Trunk and ground
Start low on the left. Draw 2 trunk lines up, stopping level with the kid's sleeves. Add the ground.
Tip Make the trunk wide, and spread the lines out at the bottom for roots.
Step 11: Thick branch
Start on the trunk. Draw a thick branch under the knees to a round tip, back to the trunk.
Tip Make it thinner toward the tip, and rub out the trunk line where it joins.
Step 12: Leafy crown
Draw a big bumpy cloud of leaves over the trunk, behind the kid's head and shoulders.
Tip Stop the leaf line where it meets the kid's T-shirt sleeves.
Step 13: Peach skin, pink cheeks
Colour the face, neck, ears, arms, hands and legs peach, with pink cheeks. Keep the eyes white.
Step 14: Red stripe, blue shorts
Colour the stripe and the shoes red, leaving the rest of the shirt white, and the shorts blue.
Step 15: Brown trunk, green leaves
Colour the trunk, branch and hair brown, and the leaves green, going around the kid. Done!
